In Genesis 13, Abram and his nephew Lot had become very wealthy, so much so that the land couldn’t support their living together. Abram proposed they separate to avoid conflict, letting Lot choose his direction first. Lot picked the best land, and Abram went the other way.
Then comes the powerful message in verse 14: Genesis 13:14-17: “And the Lord said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him: ‘Lift your eyes now and look from the place where you are—northward, southward, eastward, and westward; for all the land which you see I give to you and your descendants forever. And I will make your descendants as the dust of the earth; so that if a man could number the dust of the earth, then your descendants also could be numbered. Arise, walk in the land through its length and its width, for I give it to you.’”
What strikes me most is that the Lord spoke to Abram after Lot had separated from him. Abram heard God’s voice clearly once he had parted ways with Lot. This makes me wonder: Am I struggling to hear God’s voice because there are people in my life who shouldn’t be there right now? Sometimes, others can distract us from God’s voice, taking up conversational time meant for Him alone. Recognising who you need to step away from can put you in a better place to hear from God directly.
Consider this: Could you be a ‘Lot’ in someone else’s life? Are you unintentionally occupying the space in someone else’s life that should be reserved for God? Instead of always offering your advice, perhaps it’s time to ask, ‘What did God say?’ If they are unsure, then suggest you pray together. This shift in approach can open space for God’s voice to be heard more clearly in our lives.
In essence, the Lord longs to speak with you directly. I am convinced that a new season is approaching, one in which those who earnestly long and desire to hear God’s voice will hear Him for themselves.
Therefore, do not be discouraged if people distance themselves from you. Instead, view it as God divinely repositioning you, a strategic move to enable you to hear Him directly and more clearly.
Just like God spoke to Abram, guiding him on where to look and what to do, God will do the same for you. He knows you need direction and clarity. He sees the decisions you face and the worries you carry. The more time you spend with our Heavenly Father, the more you will recognise His voice. God is speaking, and you will hear Him for yourself.
