From Dreams to Pages- Part 2

Hey there, let’s talk about determination. I come from a family of writers, and for generations, the dream of professionally publishing a book remained just that—a dream. But I was determined to change that, not just for me but for my family. The path ahead was uncertain, but my determination was unshakeable.

Now, I ask you, how determined are you to make your dreams a reality? Because as you continue on this journey, you will find yourself drawing strength and resilience from your desire and determination. Let’s break it down: Desire + Determination – Distraction = Dream Fulfillment.

Let’s tackle Distraction – the dream-killer.

Distraction is anything that pulls you away from your focus. We all have reasons for not getting our books done—no time, too much going on, or the promise to do it later.

Here’s the truth: There will never be a perfect time to focus on writing. There will always be something trying to divert your attention. Let me share my main distractions and how I overcame them.

  1. “I have no time,” I told myself. So, I observed my day, seeking pockets of time to write. I discovered I could skip my favourite evening series, giving me 45 minutes for writing. Also, I gained an extra 20 minutes each day by leaving a little later to pick up Ezra from school. After the kids were in bed, evenings became my additional time. These few adjustments gave me three hours of writing time daily.
  2. My dad’s declining health dampened my inspiration. I felt down and emotionally drained, leading to writer’s block. I prayed, fasted and asked God to help me get this done. Inspiration began to flow again.
  3. Discouragement is another sneaky distraction. Let us face it: so many things/ people out there can easily discourage us.

Those were my top three? What are yours? Life is full of distractions, some pleasant (meaning they don’t feel like a distraction), some devastating. Many of us haven’t reached our full potential due to distractions. But don’t let distractions crush your dreams. For every distraction, there’s a way to deal with it.

I encourage you to observe your life, identify distractions, and find a way to deal with them. It will require sacrifices, like a break from media, TV, or gaming, but the results will be worthwhile. ( You could start writing while on your bus/ train ride home). Let your dreams become a reality.

Remember that Desire + Determination – Distraction = Dream fulfilment. Your dreams are within reach—seize them!
