Hello, lovely readers!
I’ve been getting a lot of questions lately about how I managed to write and publish a book. So, I will take you through my process over the next few days. Self-publishing may seem complicated, but it’s not as tricky as you think. Let’s start at the beginning.
My writing journey revolves around four key elements – what I call the 4 D’s:
Desire: Do you strongly desire to write something fueled by motivation and passion? It’s the starting point of any writing adventure.
Determination: Be persistent and determined to achieve your writing goals, overcoming challenges and setbacks.
Distraction: Deal with anything that diverts your attention from your writing goals, hindering progress. Stay focused and eliminate distractions.
Don’t give up: Maintain your resilience. The writing journey might have ups and downs, but perseverance is key.
Now, let’s talk about Desire.
Did you know there’s a writer in each one of us? We all have something unique to express, whether songs, poetry, spoken word, sermons, or books. The difference lies in the strength of our desire to put pen to paper.
I grew up writing poetry, convinced that was my niche. But, after diving into novels by authors like Francine Rivers, I longed to write a book. Doubts surfaced – “It’s not me,” I’d say. “I’ve never written anything other than poetry, and my grammar isn’t the best.” The truth is, if you focus on reasons why you can’t, you’ll find many excuses. Instead, shift your focus to how you’ll get it done.
The most challenging part of writing a book is writing it. If you have a story in mind, start writing. I remember having devotion one day in 2020 and reading Rachel’s story. Her life was captured in a few verses only. I remember saying to the Lord, “Oh, come on, Lord, there must be more to her story. How can you just drop a bomb on us like that.” And it was in that moment that I felt the Holy Spirit ask, “So why don’t you write it.” I was like, “Ok, I will. No word of a lie; I wrote 6 Chapters in that instant. I remember calling my parents and excitedly reading it to them. They were so thrilled and encouraged me to keep writing. Every day, I wrote chapters, and daily, my mum and sister would call for a chapter update.
Write while inspiration flows, and don’t stop because there’ll come a time when it’s a struggle. Remember, you don’t have to start at the very beginning. In my second book, I began in the middle, where the inspiration was strong. You can always mix, match, and edit later. The key is to start writing.
So, dear reader, as you embark on your writing journey, remember the 4 D’s. Let your desire fuel your determination, eliminate distractions, and don’t give up. Start writing today, and watch your story unfold in ways you never imagined. Your words can inspire and create, so don’t hold back – let your creativity flow!
